How to Replace a Household Heating Element

A household heating element combines the power of fire with electricity to heat a room. These heating elements have a variety of uses. They can be straight rods used in a toaster oven, or they can be bent to heat a large surface area. They are also used in electric ovens, electric stoves, and automatic coffee makers.

Heating elements are fairly easy to replace when they break or burn. A non-contact circuit tester can be used to check the power to the element. You can also use a multi-tester to check for continuity. Simply connect the black and red lead of a multimeter to the terminals of the heating element. A high resistance means the heating element is working, while a low resistance indicates a problem. Make sure the replacement heating element matches the specifications of the appliance.

Ensure the temperature is at the correct level. If the element is not hot enough, the water heater will not be able to heat up the room. If the element is too cold or too hot, you may need to adjust the thermostat to make it more comfortable. If this is not the case, you may need to replace both heating elements.

To replace a household heating element, you must know the part number and the size of the heating element. Also, you must know the current capacity in amps and the voltage. These are important factors to consider because high-density elements may be able to reach higher temperatures.
