How to Test a Microwave Oven Magnetron

Microwave ovens use electromagnetic waves to cook food. This technology is based on a metal loop called a magnetron. The loop is powered by a powerful magnet that causes electrically charged particles to jump from one side to the other. The magnet is positioned underneath the anode, which runs parallel to the cathode. Cavity magnetrons are also based on the same concept, but instead of a loop, they feature cavities that cut into the anode.

To check whether the magnetron is functioning properly, run a test. Make sure that the unit is turned on and is plugged into the wall. Use an ohmmeter to measure electrical resistance, and touch the probes to the magnetron housing and the terminals. If the resistance is more than the magnetron's tolerance, the magnetron is not working properly.

Microwave ovens that use magnetrons can cause damage if improperly used. Because they require high voltage power supplies, these appliances can overheat or burn food. Also, these devices can cause an electric shock if they are unplugged. To avoid this risk, make sure you follow the microwave oven's instructions carefully.

Once you have identified which magnetron is malfunctioning, you can replace it. The magnetron is usually found in the microwave's interior. Its lifespan is between five and seven years. If you don't have the proper tools, consider hiring a professional for the job. The cost of a replacement magnetron depends on the model and make of the microwave.
